उनका जन्म 788 ईस्वी में वैशाख माह में शुक्ल पक्ष की पंचमी तिथि पर हुआ था। आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य ने 8 साल की उम्र में सभी वेदों का ज्ञान हासिल कर लिया था। ऐसा माना जाता है कि 820 ईस्वी में सिर्फ 32 साल की उम्र में शंकराचार्य जी ने हिमालय क्षेत्र में समाधि ली थी। हालांकि शंकराचार्य जी के जन्म और समाधि लेने के वर्ष को लेकर कई तरह के मतभेद भी हैं। आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य का जन्म स्थान केरल का कालड़ी गांव माना जाता है। शंकराचार्य जी 8 साल की उम्र में सभी वेदों के जानकार हो गए थे। उन्होंने भारत की यात्रा की और चारों दिशाओं में चार पीठों की स्थापना की थी। इनका जन्म दक्षिण भारत के नम्बूदरी ब्राह्मण वंश में हुआ था। आज इसी वंश के ब्राह्मण बद्रीनाथ मंदिर के रावल होते हैं। ज्योतिर्मठ के शंकराचार्य की गद्दी पर नम्बूदरी ब्राह्मण ही बैठते हैं। शंकराचार्य जी ने गोवर्धन पुरी मठ (जगन्नाथ पुरी), श्रंगेरी पीठ (रामेश्वरम्), शारदा मठ (द्वारिका) और ज्योतिर्मठ (बद्रीनाथ धाम) की स्थापना की थी।
